How to choose a good speaker wire?
It’s often misleading that all cables are made equal. It’s also commonly misleading by many sellers especially online sellers stating the number of strains within the internal core. For example, they will mention that its 200/ 300 hundred cores for premium grade wires. However, the untold secret is whats the thickness of each strain?
The right standard for wires is AWG which stands for American Wire Gauge where it measures the thickness of the internal cores of wires, which is the true measurement of wires standard.
A lower-gauge number indicates a thicker wire, while a higher-gauge number indicates a thinner wire. This translates to thicker the wire, the lower the impedance/ resistance. As such, speaker wires with lower-gauge numbers are better at carrying an amplified audio signal. Speaker cable is the wire used for the electrical connections between speakers and amplifier sources. It has three key electrical properties: resistance, capacitance,,, and inductance. Resistance is by far the most important property to look at. Low-resistance wire allows more of the source’s power through to the speaker coil, meaning more power and more sound. Simple enough.
It’s also important that the wire lengths to both speakers are the same to ensure they both have equal impedance values. Thus, it is better to use factory-produced wire VS DIY cables that are manually cut, , often coming with irregular lengths.
